Skateboarding Hall of Famer and lifelong advocate for women in skating Cindy Whitehead recently opened up about what she believes truly matters in the long run.

Speaking on the podcast Carving It Out: Women’s Skate Stories, Whitehead explained that the medals, titles, and rankings that athletes fight for often fade from memory.

What people remember, she said, is the impact you create outside of competition.

She noted that no one is going to remember where you placed in a contest. No one is going to remember who won gold at the Olympics ten years from now. What they are going to remember is what you did with your platform and what you stood for, according to Whitehead.

She brought up Allyson Felix, one of her clients and one of the most decorated track athletes in history.

Despite Felix’s long list of victories, Whitehead admitted she doesn’t recall the exact number of medals Felix earned.

What does stay with her, though, is Felix’s fight against Nike when the company tried to cut her pay after she became pregnant.

"I don’t remember how many medals Allyson Felix has but I do remember Allyson Felix stood up to Nike and said you are not going to take away my money because I am pregnant and this has to change."

"So I think activism for me is one of the most important legacies you can live," she said.

For Whitehead, activism is not just a side project, it is what gives meaning to a career. She stressed that athletes should not let contests or rankings define their worth.

"So do not let contests rule your world and also make you upset or feel like you're not doing anything," she explained. "It's what you do with your platform, that is the most important."

To drive her point home, Whitehead often asks people at skateparks to name medal-winning skateboarders.

A few can recall some names, but most draw a blank when it comes to specifics like how many contests a skater won. That gap in memory reinforces her belief that lasting impact does not come from a scoreboard.

That is why she created Girl Is Not a 4 Letter Word, a project that lives across her social media channels.

The platform is all about highlighting and supporting girls in skateboarding, making sure they know they have a community and role models who want them to succeed together.

For Whitehead, the message is simple. Contests and trophies might feel important in the moment, but the influence you have on others is what stays alive long after the medals are tucked away in a drawer.
