A new group of independent investigators is claiming that the frontman’s death should be labeled a homicide.

Local authorities, however, are not reopening the case and continue to stand by their original ruling of suicide.

Cobain, who died in 1994 from a shotgun wound, has long been remembered as one of the most influential figures in music.

He was not just a musician, but also a core skateboarder.

Before Nirvana became a global name, Cobain was skating around Aberdeen and Seattle, and he stayed connected to skating culture throughout his life.

For a lot of skaters, he was not just a rock icon but one of their own.

According to reporting from the Daily Mail, an unofficial private sector team of forensic scientists recently conducted its own review of Cobain’s autopsy and crime scene materials.

The group brought in a specialist named Brian Burnett, who has experience analyzing gunshot trauma cases, including situations involving drug overdoses.

Independent researcher Michelle Wilkins said that after several days of examining the reports and evidence, Burnett concluded the case should be considered a homicide.

Wilkins claims the physical findings described in the autopsy are not consistent with an instantaneous death from a shotgun wound.

The team’s theory is that Cobain may have first been incapacitated with a large dose of heroin and then shot.

They argue that certain signs of organ damage point to oxygen deprivation more commonly associated with overdose.

Wilkins suggested the scene may have been staged to look like a suicide, pointing to details such as the gun receipt and shell receipt allegedly being found in Cobain’s pocket, along with shotgun shells arranged at his feet.

The weapon recovered at the scene was identified as a Remington Model 11 20 gauge shotgun.

Burnett, described as having decades of experience interpreting complex crime scenes, reportedly supported the group’s interpretation after reviewing the materials provided to him.

However, it is important to note that this was not an official reinvestigation conducted by law enforcement.

The Seattle Police Department has not changed its position.

In a statement shared with the Daily Mail, a spokesperson said detectives concluded Cobain died by suicide and that this remains the department’s stance.

The King County Medical Examiner’s Office also reaffirmed that a full autopsy was conducted in cooperation with law enforcement and that the manner of death was determined to be suicide.

The office added that it is open to revisiting conclusions if credible new evidence emerges, but stated that nothing presented so far warrants reopening the case.

Cobain’s legacy is not limited to music. He grew up skating and carried that influence with him into adulthood.

In a moment that connected generations, Tony Hawk once purchased Cobain’s original skateboard deck, rebuilt it, and rode it on his own vert ramp.

Seeing Hawk bring Cobain’s board back to life was a powerful crossover between grunge and skateboarding history.

While the official ruling on Cobain’s death has not changed, discussions continue in both music and skate communities.

Although new claims have surfaced, the case remains closed in the eyes of authorities, even as independent voices argue otherwise.
