Skate legend Tony Hawk recently shared that he bought a truly unique skateboard at an auction last year.
It’s an original Jeff Phillips model from 1985, hand painted by Kurt Cobain.
The skateboard is more than just a collectible, it connects two iconic figures who left a lasting mark in their fields, and both passed away far too young.
Hawk went a step further to track down the skateboard’s original owner to understand its full history.
He says knowing the story behind it made the acquisition even more meaningful.
With help from Derek Richardson, Hawk hopes to use this skateboard to raise awareness about emotional health and support resources for people who are struggling.
He said that it’s not just about owning a piece of history but it’s about using it to make a positive difference.
Buying the skateboard is about honoring Cobain, celebrating creativity, and helping others at the same time.

"I bought this skateboard at an auction last year. It is an original Jeff Phillips model, hand painted by Kurt Cobain in 1985. Two icons that had immense influence on their respective fields, both of whom passed away tragically and much too young. I even tracked down the original owner to understand its provenance. With the incomparable help of @dupedupe, we are hoping to make something good of this acquisition by raising awareness for emotional health, and to help provide resources for those who are struggling mentally. More to come on February 20 (Kurt’s birthday).
