The Uganda Skateboard Society recently spoke out after some critics raised concerns about the cash prize given to the winner of the Uganda Skater of the Year awards by Thrasher.
Some skaters noted that the prize was only $277 and complained that it was really small, leading to a lot of discussion online.
In a statement, the Society wanted to highlight the bigger picture. They explained that Thrasher went far beyond just giving a cash award.
They covered the full cost of the announcement party, including paying for all the rap performers, setting up the stage and lights, providing food and drinks, running the public address system, and even paying the master of ceremonies. On top of that, all four finalists received cash prizes.
The Society emphasized that the most valuable part of the event was the platform Thrasher provided for public awareness and promotion of skateboarding in Uganda.
As locals, they were not complaining about the prize. Instead, they expressed genuine gratitude for the support and the opportunity the event created for the community.
While some skaters focus on the $277 cash prize, the Uganda Skateboard Society hopes people will remember the effort and support that went into the event.
They see it as a moment to celebrate skateboarding in Uganda and to acknowledge the contributions of everyone who helped make the awards a success.
