Saturday was a special day in Ocala as the expanded Ocala Skate Park officially opened its doors with a big celebration that drew locals and families from all around.

The highlight of the event was Rodney Mullen, the legendary skateboarder who grew up just a short drive away in Gainesville, being honored with the Key to the City.

The park, located at 517 NE 9th Street, was filled with people exploring the new features, which include a competition-sized bowl, a winding snake run, and over 6,000 square feet of fresh riding surface.

The city had a full day of activities planned, including trick demonstrations, giveaways, food trucks, and even a live art installation featuring local talent.

During the opening ceremony, Mayor Ben Marciano presented Mullen with the Key to the City, and City Manager Pete Lee spoke about how the park has grown over the years.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled to mark the official date of the expansion, adding a lasting touch to the celebration.

Although the schedule included media interviews, Mullen decided to spend his time directly with the fans who came out to see him.

He signed boards, took pictures, and talked to local skaters, making the day memorable for everyone who got a chance to meet him.

Many attendees said watching him interact with the crowd made the event feel personal and relaxed, with plenty of laughter and shared stories about skating.

Mullen’s influence on skateboarding goes back decades. He picked up a board at the age of ten in 1977 and turned pro as a teenager.

Over the years, he created tricks that have become core to skateboarding, including the ollie, kickflip, heelflip, impossible flip, 360-flip, and darkslide.

The expansion project began last August under the management of Platform Group, LLC, and it adds a fresh chapter to a park that first opened in May 2019.

The new design offers more room for skating and a mix of elements that appeal to both beginners and experienced riders.

Attendees enjoyed the mix of skating, music, art, and community, and many left saying they appreciated seeing someone like Mullen take the time to connect with everyone.
