As we previously reported, The Boonies top-seeded professional skateboarder Taylor Silverman is still not done fighting against her adversary after losing to a transgender skateboarder, Lillian Gallagher.
Gallagher took home the $5,000 cash prize for placing first and winning two separate divisions—a prize that Silverman argues should have been awarded to her.
Pro skateboarder Taylor Silverman said, "This man placed first; he also won women's best trick, and between the qualifiers and the finals, he took home $5,000 of the prize money that was meant for women."
While many skateboarders are against trans skaters competing against biological women in contests and the LGBTQIA+ community and its allies have rallied to protect transgender women, professional skateboarder Jordan Maxham has a different point of view on the issue.
"This is so simple," Maxham said. "If everyone wants competing to be 'fair,' create a new category for TS. They are clearly in their own lane, so they need their own category."
Maxham’s proposal aims to address the current concerns about fairness in competitions by providing a dedicated space for transgender skaters. This would ensure that everyone has an equal shot at competing on a level playing field.
The debate brings up bigger discussions about fairness and inclusivity in sports. Supporters of the idea believe that having separate categories could encourage more participation and recognition in skating, regardless of gender.
However, some worry that this could impact the inclusivity of skating and the meaning of existing categories and competitions. The conversation continues, and it's clear that finding a solution that works for everyone while maintaining fairness in competition is a complex issue.
