Skateboarding legend John Cardiel has done something most people would call crazy, and he pulled it off.
He swam across the waters of Alcatraz.
That’s right, the same cold, rough stretch of the San Francisco Bay that has kept countless swimmers from making it. And he did it on his own.
This isn’t just about swimming. It’s another chapter in a story that started back in 2003 when Cardiel got a serious spinal cord injury that changed everything for him.
Since then, he’s been grinding every single day, putting in hours of training, and showing that determination don’t come in neat packages.
Over the years, Cardiel faced challenges that would make most people quit, but he kept moving, kept learning, and kept going.
This time, he was all about hitting the Alcatraz swim and we ain’t talking no easy dip. The waters are cold, rough, and straight-up unforgiving.
He put in the work, learning the currents, braving the cold, and getting ready for whatever the Bay was gonna throw at him. And today he showed up and owned it. No help, no shortcuts, just him and the water.
Seeing him finish that swim is inspiring. It’s not just about making it across, it’s about all the grind and dedication that got him here. From trannys (transition, not a guy with a you know) to the waters of Alcatraz, Cardiel keeps challenging himself and showing what real commitment looks like.
Big respect to John Cardiel. Mad strong swim.
