Professional skateboarder Andy Roy posted on Instagram with an emotional post celebrating six years clean and sober, and he did not sugarcoat a single part of it.
The 50-year-old opened up about the darkest chapters of his addiction, the damage it caused, and the gratitude he feels waking up every day with a clear head.
“Today I have 6 years clean and sober!!!” Roy wrote. “Everyday I wake up breathing I know it’s gonna be a fucking great day!!!”
For anyone who has followed Roy over the years, his honesty is nothing new.
He has always spoken straight from the heart, and this time was no different. He talked openly about decades of shooting drugs, about running out of veins, about hurting the people who loved him most.
He said that he is not proud of who he was during those years. He admitted to breaking his parents’ hearts, destroying good opportunities, and living in survival mode just to get his next fix.
At his lowest point, Roy believed he would die addicted. He described sleeping in bushes, recycling cans, riding stolen BMX bikes, robbing and stealing just to stay high. It was a life that felt hopeless and endless at the time.
Looking back now, he speaks about it not to glorify it, but to show how far gone he once was and how different things are today.
Now, six years into sobriety, Roy says he is healthier, stronger, and happier than he has ever been.
The tone of his message was intense but also full of gratitude. He encouraged anyone struggling with drugs or alcohol to fight for themselves. “If I can get clean so can you,” he wrote. He called human beings warriors and urged people to dig deep and never give up.
Roy also reflected on the kind of man he wants to be today.
He said he no longer wants to be someone people cannot trust or be around. Instead, he chooses kindness, love, and connection. He is not afraid to hug his friends or tell them he loves them.
After losing too many people, he understands how short life is and how important it is to appreciate the time you have.
A big part of his gratitude was directed toward Ron Honn and the team at New Origins. Roy thanked Honn publicly, calling him a hero and someone he looks up to deeply.
He credited the program and its staff for caring about people who struggle with addiction and for helping many turn their lives around. For Roy, that support made a real difference.
He also thanked friends, supporters, and everyone who reached out when he was at his worst. He acknowledged that he could not have done it alone.
