Friends, family, and neighbors gathered on Saturday evening to honor a skateboarder who was struck and killed by an LAPD vehicle in Highland Park.
The vigil drew people from across the neighborhood, who came together to leave candles, flowers, and pictures near Figueroa Street and Sycamore Grove Park, the location where the tragic incident occurred on Friday.
The Los Angeles Police Department described the incident as a "tragic accident." According to authorities, the man was riding a skateboard in the median of Figueroa Street, heading south around 7 p.m. At the same time, an LAPD patrol vehicle with lights and sirens on was traveling north in the median to move past traffic on the busy street.
The skateboarder died at the scene, near a carnival that was taking place at the nearby park.
Community members who attended the vigil said the location has long been a gathering spot for skateboarders and families, making the loss feel especially close to home.
Officials have not released the victim's full identity.
On social media, he has been referred to as "Jerry," and he is believed to be in his late 20s or early 30s. Friends remembered him as someone who loved being on his skateboard and was well known in the local skateboarding community.
Witnesses at the scene said the police vehicle appeared to be moving very quickly, while the LAPD maintained that their speed was not excessive.
Authorities confirmed that officers often use the median to get past traffic when their lights and sirens are on, but said a full investigation into the circumstances of the crash is still underway.
At the vigil, people shared memories, offered hugs, and expressed frustration with the situation. Many said they hoped the tragedy would encourage more conversation about safety in the area and how emergency vehicles navigate crowded streets.
Neighbors said they hope the community can come together to support each other while the investigation continues, and to remember the young man as someone who brought smiles to people around him.
