President Donald Trump just announced a thirty percent tariff on goods coming in from Mexico, and yeah, that includes skateboard decks.

According to reports, starting August first, it’s going to cost more to bring those boards across the border, and that means prices could be going up at your local shop pretty soon.

A lot of skaters might not realize how many decks actually come from Mexico.

Those places have been putting out solid boards for years. The wood is good, the build is strong, and the price has always been pretty fair.

That setup has helped smaller brands grow and made it easier for local skate shops to stay stocked without going broke.

But now with this new tariff, all of that’s getting shaken up. A board that used to cost seventy five bucks might jump closer to ninety or even a hundred.

For skaters already scraping together cash to set up a board, that is not great news.

Shops are in a tough spot too. They either have to raise prices or take a hit on their profits. And let’s be real, most shops are not swimming in cash. This hits the small, independent spots way harder than the big retailers.

This whole thing started because President Trump says Mexico is not doing enough to stop cartels and drug smuggling at the border.

In a letter to Mexico’s president, he basically said that things need to change or there will be consequences. The tariff is part of that pressure.

Mexico’s government is not happy about it. They said the decision is unfair and that they were already talking with the U.S. about trade stuff.

But the new rule is happening anyway, and it’s not just about skateboards. Cars, beer, produce, electronics, and a ton of other stuff from Mexico is getting hit with the same increase.

It also affects the European Union, which is getting slapped with a thirty percent tariff too, but that’s a whole other situation.

The skate world is focused on one thing right now, and that’s how this will mess with the cost of gear.

Some brands might try to move production out of Mexico, but that takes time and money, and it’s not something smaller companies can do easily. For now, a lot of shops and skaters are going to have to deal with whatever price hike comes next.

Skaters have always figured things out. Broken boards get patched up, old wheels get reused, and gear gets passed around. But this just makes things harder for everyone, especially new kids trying to get into it. The cost of a fresh setup is already high. This makes it worse.

So if your favorite shop has to bump their prices or your next deck feels more expensive than it should, now you know why. This isn’t just some random political move that stays in Washington. It’s going to hit real people that skates.

Skating is all about adapting, and no one’s stopping because of this. But yeah, it kind of sucks.
