Legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk has found himself at the center of the Skater of the Year (SOTY) conversation for 2023.
At 55, Hawk, an icon in the skateboarding world for decades, expressed his disbelief and gratitude for being considered a strong contender for the prestigious title once again.
Hawk, who first received the inaugural SOTY title 33 years ago, spoke candidly about his unexpected nomination. "I honestly can't believe that I'm in this conversation a year after [re]repairing my broken leg, and 33 years after being bestowed with the inaugural SOTY title," he shared.
The skateboarding legend has been through his fair share of challenges, including recovering from a broken leg.
Despite the obstacles, Hawk's resilience and passion for skating have propelled him back into the spotlight.
His nomination as a severe contender for SOTY speaks not only to his skill on a skateboard but also to his enduring impact on skateboarding culture.
"It has been an honor and a privilege being considered relevant among so much incredible (and comparatively young) skateboarding talent. Thanks for the decades of support and consistent joy you’ve all provided… skating is the best, even when it hurts," Hawk said, expressing his gratitude to the skateboarding community that has supported him throughout his career.
