Skateboarding legend Tony Hawk has partnered with Montreal's Laughing Dragon Studios to create an animated TV series aimed at children aged 6-11 called, "Skatebirds."
According to reports, the show will celebrate skateboarding's playful community and its adventurous nature while focusing on teamwork, friendship and community, all of which are elements of the skateboarding community that Hawk has helped to foster.
The heart of the series lies in a flock of young, feathered skateboarders, united by their love for their hometown and a shared belief in their ability to conquer any challenge.
Each 11-minute episode empowers teamwork and determination, with plans to cater to the digital-savvy generation through shorter formats on platforms like TikTok and YouTube.
The Birdman is not new to having huge TV deals. In 2021, HBO licensed Tony Hawk: Until The Wheels Fall Off, a feature documentary on the life and career of the skateboarding legend, from Mark and Jay Duplass' Duplass Brothers Productions and director Sam Jones.
Laughing Dragon Studios, a leading 2D animation studio with an impressive portfolio including Apple TV+'s Central Park and Disney's Disenchanted, is the creative force behind 'Skatebirds.' Their diverse projects, including the madcap mythologic title Isaac & Friends and an animated adaptation of Least I Could Do, demonstrate their versatility and commitment to delivering quality entertainment.
Ryan Sohmer, CEO of Laughing Dragon, expressed his excitement about working with Tony Hawk, saying, "There's a list of people that I hoped to create an animated series with somewhere in a drawer of a home I no longer live in. At the top of that list is Tony Hawk - a guy who managed to get this uncoordinated human atop a skateboard and taste asphalt a few moments later. I could not be more thrilled to have Tony leading the way on Skatebirds and introducing this community to a whole new generation."
