Professional skateboarder and Chico Stix business owener Chico Brenes has always been vocal about the impact skateboarding had on his life.

Growing up in Nicaragua before moving to the United States, he could have easily taken a different path.

Instead, he found skateboarding, and that made all the difference.

During a talk at the San Francisco Public Library, Brenes spoke about how skateboarding kept him focused and away from trouble.

He pointed out that when young people really dive into skating, they’re less likely to get dragged into bad distractions.

For him, it wasn’t just about tricks and style - it was about having something to dedicate himself to, something that required patience, discipline, and constant improvement.

Brenes didn’t just skate for fun; he turned it into a lifelong pursuit.

From riding for World Industries in the ‘90s to becoming a key part of Chocolate Skateboards, he built a career that kept him involved in the scene.

Even after stepping away from major sponsorships, he stayed dedicated by launching his own brand, Chico Stix, which reflects his deep connection to skateboarding’s culture and roots.

His message is simple: when kids are focused on skating, they’re less likely to get caught up in the wrong crowd.

Whether it's spending hours at the park trying to land a new trick or filming with friends, skateboarding creates a sense of purpose.

It teaches lessons beyond just physical skills - determination, resilience, and respect for those who came before.

Brenes has seen firsthand how skateboarding can change lives. He believes it’s a positive outlet that keeps people motivated, active, and engaged.

By sharing his experiences, he hopes to inspire younger skaters to stick with it, stay focused, and avoid distractions that could lead them down a different road.

For Brenes, skateboarding isn’t just a pastime. It’s a way to stay grounded, no matter where life takes you.
