Before skater rappers were a thing, pro skateboarder Rob Dyrdek was already doing his own version of it. Dressed in all white and carrying a sleazy attitude, he became Bobby Light.
It started as a joke, but the skits and songs quickly turned into something people actually looked forward to.
It was catchy, dumb in the best way, and always involved his best friend Christopher "Big Black" Boykin somewhere nearby, either laughing or dancing along.
The Bobby Light character came to life during the Rob & Big days on MTV.
That show was full of nonsense, and Bobby Light was just one of many wild ideas that somehow made it to TV. But what made it work wasn’t just the outfit or the over-the-top lyrics.
It was the friendship behind it all. Rob and Big had something rare.
They were just two dudes having fun and making each other laugh, and the music videos were just another excuse to goof off together.
When Big Black passed away in 2017, a lot of fans went back to those old clips. The Bobby Light skits were a big part of that.
Not because they were serious music moments but because they were reminders of how fun things used to be. It was never about making hits.
It was about being weird, making your best friend laugh, and giving people something completely different to enjoy.
Rest easy Big Black. Bobby Light might have been the face of the joke, but you were always the heart behind it.
