A 25-year-old disgraced poser and mongo pusher was sentenced Friday to seven years to life in prison for trying to sexually assault a woman cleaning offices late at night in Irvine.
According to reports, Eduardo Godoy Gonzalez confronted the woman at about one thirty in the morning while she was working in an office building on Von Karman Avenue.
Surveillance video caught the struggle, and Orange County Superior Court Judge Terri K. Flynn-Peister remarked that it was remarkable the woman was able to fight him off while carrying a vacuum pack on her back.
The video captured her screams, showing just how terrifying the situation became. The judge also noted that the victim’s impact statement made earlier this year showed she continues to struggle with trauma from the incident.
Gonzalez’s attorney argued that his client should not receive a life sentence, pointing to his age at the time of the attack and his lack of prior criminal history.
But the judge said the cold, deliberate nature of the crime outweighed any of those factors. Gonzalez was given credit for the time he spent in jail awaiting trial, which totaled one thousand seven hundred thirty-three days, and he was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.
Deputy District Attorney Jeffrey Boyd pointed out that Gonzalez had been caught using drugs while in jail, showing he had not learned from his actions.
The poser admitted to being under the influence of drugs during the attack. Boyd noted that it was clear Gonzalez repeated the same reckless behavior that landed him in prison.
As per the prosecutors, Gonzalez approached the janitor carrying a skateboard and asked her in Spanish if she was the only one there.
The woman asked if he worked in the building, trying to stay calm. Gonzalez then made a series of threats and inappropriate offers, including offering money for sex and displaying a fake gun. He even threatened to kill her when she explained she had children.
The wannabe skater grabbed her by the neck and forced her about twenty feet into a conference room, where they struggled for several minutes. The woman screamed for help while he stumbled over an ottoman, dropping the gun and giving her the chance to run to the neighboring office. DNA evidence from the glass doors in the building helped police track him down, and a tip from his manager at a grocery store confirmed his identity.
Prosecutors also said that Gonzalez had harassed another woman days before the attack. He offered money for a sex act, and when she tried to refuse, he persisted. She managed to stay safe by walking with him to a busy intersection and exchanging contact information under caution.
The mongo pusher was convicted in December of multiple felonies, including kidnapping to commit a sex offense, assault with intent to commit a sex offense, criminal threats, and burglary. He was also convicted of a misdemeanor for brandishing a replica gun.
The case highlights the danger Gonzalez posed to the community and the severity of his actions. The victim’s bravery in fighting back and surviving the attack played a critical role in bringing him to justice.
