Pro skateboarder Omar Salazar has been quiet in skateboarding for some time now.
Instead of hitting the streets every day, he has been focusing on other creative outlets like filming movies and stepping into acting.
His presence might not be the same as it was during his heavy skateboarding years, but his brand DoomSayers has kept the name alive, including collaborations such as the limited edition work with Fast Times.
Recently, Salazar shared something that caught the attention of the skate community. On social media, he revealed that he uncovered old tapes from the early 2000s and that he is trying to bring them back to life.
The tapes contain what he calls Phone Home, a project filmed around 2005 that includes clips from Nike SB’s Nothing But the Truth era, along with sessions from some of the best skateboarders at the time.
The footage has been sitting on original MiniDV camcorder tapes for nearly two decades. Salazar explained that he wants to release it but needs to figure out how to transfer everything into a digital format before it can see the light of day.
He wrote:
“DoomSayers production’s “Phone Home”. Lost & found 20 years later from around the world with some of the best skateboarders and never before seen video from 2005 from Nike SB “nothing but the truth” and meeting etc. A project I’m attempting to unravel. Just need to figure out how to get it off the tapes.
.”
For fans of Salazar and DoomSayers, this feels like the kind of release that could give a glimpse into a raw part of skateboarding history that was left on the shelf for years.
With technology now making it easier to preserve and share old footage, the possibility of Phone Home finally being pieced together and released has people watching closely.
If Salazar manages to get the tapes transferred, the video could become a time capsule from an era that many skaters still look back on with respect and nostalgia.
