If you’ve been skateboarding at any point in the past few decades, you know The Master of Disaster Duane Peters.
You know the gnar. You know the sound of his voice. You know the wreckage. And if you didn’t already know, he just hit three and a half years clean.
And not the quiet kind of clean. Not the “posted a pic holding a coin” clean. Not the inspirational speaker tour kind of clean. We're talking the DP clean. Honest. Somehow still alive.
He announced it like this:
“SOBRIETY DATE JAN 2 2022 is 3.1/2 years of sobriety !!!! I STAND RE- CORRECTED ! HA HA”
He’s not celebrating with balloons or photoshopped flyers. He told it like it is: this is the longest he’s been clean in 25 years.
But the universe didn’t take him. Not then. Not yet. He got sober. Now, three and a half years in, he is still kicking it.
As for jobs, cliques, and trying to “play nice,” DP hasn’t changed much. He’s not interested in being part of the social team. Doesn’t care to kiss anyone’s ass.
He might not be the version of sober that comes with daily affirmations, but he’s made it three and a half years without killing himself or going back to the bottle.
If DP has ever meant anything to you. If his skating, his music, or just his survival mattered. You can support him directly. He’s still homeless and a senior now, with no safety net. If you’re able to help, even a little, you can donate to him at:
