In Brazil’s skate scene, there’s one story that people keep bringing up.
It’s not because it’s dramatic. It’s because it’s real and full of heart. It’s the story of pro skater Carlos Ribeiro, and the man who helped make everything happen behind the scenes.
That man is Carlão, his father. And right in the middle of it all is an old Kombi van that became something more than just a ride.
Carlão was never just the guy behind the wheel. He was the one making sure everyone made it to the session.
He drove across cities, waited for hours while the crew filmed, and kept the doors of that Kombi open to anyone who needed a ride or a place to crash.
It wasn’t only about Carlos. It was about the entire skate community around them. Carlão became a father figure to skaters throughout Novo Hamburgo and far beyond.
Primitive Skateboarding just released a short film called “THE KOMBI” that tells this story in a way that hits home.
The Kombi was more than transportation. It was part skate van, part safe space, and part launchpad.
Carlos and his friends piled into it with boards, dreams, and no clue what would happen next. They just knew that if Carlão was driving, they’d get there.
That Kombi carried them through contests, street missions, long road trips, and moments that defined their lives.
Carlão never asked for attention. He just kept showing up. He didn’t care about money or recognition. He wanted his son and his friends to have a chance to skate and to chase something real.
That kind of love sticks with you. It shaped the way Carlos skates, how he carries himself, and how he talks about where he came from.
Now the rest of the world gets to see that too.
