Brooklyn residents are protesting against Tony Hawk's proposed skate park in Mount Prospect Park, claiming the project will destroy the park's greenery.

The Skatepark Project, which supports the initiative, is being criticized by locals who believe preserving the park's greenspace is vital for the community.

A group of passionate residents are gearing up to stage a protest outside the Beacon Theater during Hawk's show. Their aim is to persuade him to reconsider the project and to underscore the importance of safeguarding natural spaces in urban environments. They worry that the skate park if built, will further diminish the already scarce green space in Brooklyn.

The Friends of Mount Prospect Park co-chair, Hayley Gorenberg, expressed concerns about the project's impact on the area's vital greenspace. She emphasized that preserving Mount Prospect Park is crucial to the community as Brooklyn already faces challenges with limited greenspace per person and excessive paving.

While there are vocal opponents to the skate park plan, there are also supporters who see it as a potential boon. They argue that it could offer a much-needed recreational space for skateboarders and families, adding a new dimension to the park.

This controversy allows broader discussions about urban planning, green initiatives, and community engagement in shaping public spaces, while having a secure skatepark for all ages.
