Skateboarder Antony Bello has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, according to a GoFundMe campaign created by his wife, Deilimar Salas, who is asking the public to help cover legal costs and support their family during his immigration case.
In the fundraiser, Salas said that she, Bello, and their son have been living legally in the United States for more than three years.
She explained that Bello was taken into ICE custody on Sunday, July 19, and has remained in detention since then.
She said their family has been struggling since his detention, explaining that their son has had a difficult time understanding why his father has not come home.
Bello is currently facing removal proceedings and needs legal representation as he seeks to remain with his family in the United States.
Salas said the costs for attorneys, court appearances, and immigration filings are more than the family can afford.
She described him as a father who regularly attended his son's skateboarding competitions and spent time with him at the skatepark after work as he practiced and worked toward his dream of becoming a professional skateboarder.
Salas described her husband as a hardworking father and friend who has always supported those around him.
She said their family is asking friends, relatives, and members of their community to donate or share the fundraiser while Bello remains in detention.
Donations will help cover attorney fees, court representation, his habeas corpus petition, his asylum case, and everyday living expenses while he is unable to work and provide for his family.
Donations are welcome from anyone who is able to help. The GoFundMe campaign has a $10,000 goal, and as of the time of this writing, the family has raised $5,651 toward that goal.
