If you haven’t checked out KASSO yet, now’s a good time to catch up. Especially with episodes 5 and 6 now out and streaming.
This show, made by TBS (yup, the same folks behind Ninja Warrior and Takeshi’s Castle), blends skateboarding with the kind of storytelling and character moments that only Japanese TV can deliver.
Unlike most skateboarding shows, KASSO isn’t just clips of people throwing down tricks
It’s got structure. It’s got weird challenges. It’s got skaters who aren’t afraid to mess around and show personality.
And it all comes with a camera style and editing that feels part game show, part skate sesh, and part something else entirely.
It’s not trying to be cool or overproduced. It doesn’t pretend skating is always serious or always chill.
It gives you both the falls and the lands, the laughing and the frustration, the nonsense and the skill.
You get the sense that the people making it actually skate, or at least really get what makes skating fun.
