In honor of Pride Month, Queer Skate Austin is all about building up the LGBTQIA+ community through skateboarding. They recently held a cool event at the Gaylord Sackler Memorial Skate Park to celebrate Pride Month. It was all about skating, hanging out, and coming together as a community.
Nawal T., who helps run the group, was totally owning the skate park. She got into skating a year ago when she started joining these meetups. She feels like the community really supports her and her love for skating.
Casey Gaston, another member, was busy giving tips to new skaters. "It can be super intimidating to skate alone," Gaston said. "Especially if you’re visibly queer, it can feel unsafe. That’s why we're creating a space where everyone can be themselves and feel safe."
They recently had their "3rd Annual Pride Roll Out" event and opened it up to everyone—no matter their wheels, gender, or sexual identity. They encouraged people to wear their brightest, gayest outfits and meet up for a skate through Austin's rainbow district and other nightlife spots. It's all about celebrating, but safety first, so they asked everyone to gear up and be comfortable with rough terrain and hills. And of course, it's a Saturday night, so you've got to be 18+ to join, and 21+ if you want to hit up the post-rollout drinks at BSS!
