In 2020, amidst the global pandemic, a new skateboarding brand emerged: Uma Landsleds.
However, the similarity of their name to the German multinational corporation that designs and manufactures athletic and casual footwear, apparel, and accessories, Puma, caught the attention of the sportswear giant's legal team, leading to legal action.
Now, Uma Landsleds has officially changed its brand name to Umaverse.
According to Evan Smith, Puma sued them for their brand being named Uma. "So Fuck that we rise! Welcome to the Umaverse," he said.
A cease and desist letter serves as a formal notice requesting that someone stop engaging in an activity considered harmful or illegal.
Although it may not have the same legal force as an order or injunction, it can effectively pressure the recipient to stop their actions.
If the recipient ignores the letter, it can be used as evidence in court to show that they were warned about the behavior and chose to ignore it.

The board company had to comply with specific regulations and rebrand itself with a different name.
Alongside the rebranding announcement, Umaverse has posted its stacked team, which includes Smith himself, Roman Pabich, Maite Steenhoudt, Cody Chapman, Leonardo Favaro, Treveon Wade, Leon Chapdelaine, Brad Saunders, and Javon Goodman.
