Only a month after saying goodbye to one of its longtime stores, 303 Boards is now facing a much bigger challenge.

According to reports, the Colorado core skate shop has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection following the recent closure of its Boulder location, a shop that had served local skaters for seven years.

At the time of the closure, company president Sam Schuman spoke openly about the difficulties small businesses face while competing in an environment increasingly dominated by larger corporations.

Now those concerns appear to have developed into a deeper financial struggle.

Court filings show that 303 The Hill Ltd., an affiliate of 303 Boards, submitted a Subchapter V Chapter 11 petition in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Colorado on June 18. The filing listed more than $705,000 in liabilities compared to roughly $85,000 in assets.

Among the largest debts are obligations to Shopify Capital, PNC Bank, and Fenix Capital Funding. The figures paint a picture of a company trying to manage significant financial obligations while continuing operations.

For many skaters, the news is difficult to hear.

Since opening in 1997, 303 Boards has become a staple of Colorado skateboarding.

The retailer built its reputation through its selection of skateboards, shoes, apparel, accessories, and hardgoods while supporting the local scene for nearly three decades.

Although the Boulder location is gone, the company still operates two Denver stores and maintains an online shop.

The bankruptcy filing follows an emotional announcement made earlier this year when Schuman revealed the Boulder store would be closing its doors.

In that message, he encouraged customers to support local businesses before more of them disappear from their communities. His comments resonated with many independent shop owners who continue to deal with rising costs and increasingly difficult market conditions.

What makes the situation noteworthy is that the challenges facing 303 Boards come at a time when skate related sales have actually been growing.

Recent industry data shows wholesale sales in the skate and surf category climbed to more than $1.1 billion in 2025, representing strong growth compared to previous years. The broader sporting goods sector also reported gains, with wholesale sales reaching approximately $130 billion.

Those numbers suggest consumer interest remains healthy. Yet growing sales across an industry do not always guarantee success at the retail level.

Independent stores often face a different reality than larger chains. National retailers typically have greater buying power, larger marketing budgets, wider product availability, and more resources to weather economic uncertainty.

For specialty shops, maintaining profitability can become increasingly difficult even when overall demand remains strong.

303 Boards is not alone in dealing with those pressures. Several niche sporting goods retailers have entered bankruptcy proceedings this year as competition continues to intensify across the retail landscape.

Right now, Chapter 11 gives 303 Boards an opportunity to reorganize its finances while continuing business operations.

What happens next remains to be seen, but the filing represents another challenging moment for a company that has long been part of Colorado's skateboarding community.
