For 25 years Woodward West was that spot.
Kids came through to skate, hang out, learn to shred, and find a second family. It was more than a camp. It was the place where a lot of people learned who they were on and off the board.
Now it is official. Woodward West is closing down. The team said it was a tough call but they had to do it to keep Woodward strong as a whole. The original camp in Pennsylvania is still running and that is where future skaters will get to pull up.
Anyone who has been to West knows what it was. Long summer days where kids would grind until they were tired, falling, getting back up, and going again.
Nights filled with laughs, inside jokes, and friendships that stuck even after camp was over. People did not just come home with new tricks. They came home feeling different, with stories to tell and confidence in themselves.
The skateboarding camp was where first kickflips went down. Where a shaky ollie turned into a clean pop. Where the cheers from other kids made you feel like you belonged. That park, those ramps, those bowls, they were more than just wood and concrete. They carried memories.
In their message Woodward thanked everybody who trusted them. The families who sent their kids. The skaters who showed up year after year. The friends who made it feel like home.
The doors might be closing but the spirit of West is not gone. Pennsylvania is still open and ready. The stories, the camaraderie, the summers that felt endless, those will always live on with the people who were there. Woodward West might not be around anymore but what it gave skaters can never be taken away.
