Skateboarding has always been about having a backup plan.
You bring an extra set of bearings, keep a spare deck at home, and probably have another pair of shoes ready when your current ones finally give up.
But apparently, some people apply that same thinking to their love lives.
According to a survey, half of the 1,000 women questioned admitted to having another person they could turn to if their current relationship came to an end.
Yes, even those who are already married have someone waiting in the wings.
Think of it as keeping a spare skateboard in the garage, except this time, we're talking about a person.
The findings get even more interesting when you look at the details.
Around one in 10 women said their backup option was someone who had already confessed their feelings for them.
Another 20% believed this person would drop everything and come running if they ever decided to give them a call.
Apparently, the backup arrangements aren't always with someone new, either.
Roughly half said they met this person after getting together with their current partner, while the rest had already known them before their relationship began.
Things get even more complicated when feelings enter the picture.
One in four women with a backup admitted their feelings for that person were just as strong as those they had for their current partner.
Around 12% even confessed that their attachment to the alternative was stronger.
Now that's a pretty complicated situation.
And these aren't necessarily people who have completely disappeared from their lives. Seven in 10 women said they were still in contact with their backup partner.
So, while their current relationship might be going just fine, that other person hasn't exactly been forgotten.
There's also the question of how much their partners know.
Half of the women with a backup said their current husband or boyfriend was aware of the arrangement.
Some could laugh about it together, while others admitted that bringing up the subject made things uncomfortable.
Perhaps the strangest detail is that one in four women said their husband had actually met the backup person.
Even more amusing, one in five revealed that this person was one of their husband's own friends.
Imagine going out for a skate sesh with your crew, only to discover that one of your closest friends is somebody's romantic Plan B.
That's one way to make the next group hangout awkward.
Of course, having someone in mind doesn't automatically mean someone is planning to leave their relationship.
People have different reasons for keeping old connections around, and a survey like this doesn't tell the whole story about individual couples.
Still, the numbers make for an interesting conversation.
Skateboarders already understand the value of having spare parts when something breaks. But when it comes to relationships, perhaps keeping a backup person isn't quite as simple as having an extra set of trucks.
