Vans Off The Wall and Fashion brand J.Crew are in hot water right now after dropping their new collab.
The fit might have been the main attraction, but people are way more focused on the campaign images.
A bunch of users are convinced that the photos look AI generated, and what really set people off is that the brands never mentioned it.
One person put it bluntly and said, “Undisclosed AI generated imagery isn't remotely what I'd expect from a respectable heritage brand like J Crew. Do better y'all.” That comment sums up the frustration pretty well. If brands want to use AI, fine, but being upfront about it is the bare minimum.
Things got even more heated when another user pointed out the bigger issue of representation. They said, “When a white run company uses AI to pretend they hired a black artist to model in his studio, seems like blackface, no?” That line struck a chord because it moves the conversation away from tech experiments and into something much more serious.
People want to see real creators being paid and celebrated, not a computer making fake versions of their work or identity.
Then there was the question of how this even slipped past the creative team. One comment joked, “How does the JC creative team not even come close to catching this? Did they have blindfolds on?” It might have been said with some humor, but it also reflects how baffled fans are.
