When Vans announced its collaboration with Fugazi, plenty of skateboarders were excited to see what the project would bring.
At the same time, many people were asking the same question. Was Vans working with the legendary hardcore punk band Fugazi, or was it the streetwear label that shares the same name?
The confusion spread quickly across social media, especially among longtime skateboarding and punk fans who immediately connected the name with the iconic band led by Ian MacKaye.
Since both have strong ties to skate culture, it was easy to see why so many people mixed them up.
As we previously reported, the collaboration is actually with Fugazi, the clothing brand, not the influential hardcore band.

Even so, the misunderstanding became a major topic of conversation online.
Because of that, Steve Van Doren decided to address the situation himself. He wanted to make sure fans understood that the two Fugazis are completely separate while also showing respect to the band's legacy and its relationship with skateboarding.
Steve wrote:
"Sorry for any confusion this Past week. Fugazi the Band and Fugazi the clothing Brand are not connected. I have deep respect for Ian MacKaye, his impact on music and his connection to Skateboarding. We spoke this morning and are looking at ways to support longtime skateboarders and giving back to the communities we both care deeply about."
Steve's statement quickly answered the questions many people had been asking. While the Vans collaboration remains with the clothing brand, he also shared that he had already spoken with Ian MacKaye following the confusion.
Instead of letting the misunderstanding grow, the conversation has now shifted toward something much more meaningful.
According to Steve, he and MacKaye are discussing ways to support longtime skateboarders and give back to the communities that have meant so much to both of them over the years.
For many skaters, that part of his message stood out the most. Even though the collaboration itself is unrelated to the band, it opened the door for a positive conversation between two figures who have each had a lasting influence on skateboarding culture in their own way.
With Steve's statement now out in the open, there is no longer any confusion about the Vans x Fugazi release.
The collaboration is with the Fugazi clothing brand, while the legendary hardcore band remains a completely separate entity.
