Portland’s Courts 2.0 is almost ready, but an unexpected construction cost has left the project $20,000 short.
During demolition, Grindline Skateparks uncovered a huge amount of buried concrete debris. Removing it cost around $20,000, leaving the crew without enough funding to complete the asphalt paving. If the remaining funds cannot be raised, construction will have to pause.
The project is a new version of the original Courts, where Portland skaters once gathered for ramp builds, demos, meetups, and events with groups like Skate Like a Girl. After the original site was lost to development, several DIY spots came and went, leaving the community wanting a permanent place to skate.
Through grants, donated design work from a local skater architect, and plenty of community effort, Courts 2.0 is now close to completion.
The finished space will feature concrete ledges, obstacles, and plans for additions such as murals, a basketball hoop, and shade structures. There is also word that Preston Harper’s watermelon boxes will find a home there.
