An anonymous skateboarder reinstalled and rebranded the Network Creek Alliance's (NCA) signage at the Penny Bridge Street End site.
Since 2017, the community-based organization dedicated to restoring, revealing, and revitalizing Newtown Creek has taken the lead in cleaning up this public overlook.
They have removed tons of debris, created new paths, and introduced native plants and furniture to support wildlife and community members.
This effort has not only improved the area's visual appeal but has also instilled a sense of pride in the local community.
In 2020, NCA installed an outdoor sign with historic photos and text explaining the significance of this location.
After a few years, the hard surfaces in the area were covered in spray paint and stickers, making it difficult for visitors to examine any text or photos.
"We were literally planning to reinstall a new sign later this week, "NCA wrote, "When low and behold someone beat us to it and installed a new one (a digital version has been available on our website) with a slightly revised heading to read "Tom Penny Bridge."
NCA acknowledged legendary professional skateboarder Tom Penny and said that he has a raw talent and enigmatic persona and has influenced skateboarders since the 1990s.
They added, "Given the rise of formal and DIY skateparks around Newtown Creek in recent years (Sgt. Dougherty; Under the K Bridge; Mosquito Beach; and Maspeth Park), it seems appropriate to have a skateboard themed rebranding for the sign; and even the NCA logo."
