Onelegacy Skateboard Co. owner David Coons alleges that the Olympics reached out to adaptive skateboarders to make an appearance and do a demo at the 2024 Paris Olympics for inclusivity and diversity, aiming for it to become a Paralympic sport.
It's really disappointing to hear that the adaptive skateboarding community was apparently let down after being assured that they would have the opportunity to showcase their skills on a global stage. They were not only looking forward to representing their country, but also to serve as a positive role model for audiences everywhere.
Coons was disappointed when the Olympics canceled the event, telling them it was due to the rain. "It did not rain," he stated.
Unfortunately, the course was torn apart when the adaptive skaters went to the supposed event but were told to leave. "The families were told to leave, that the event was not happening due to rain but it did not rain," Coons apologized.
It's really sad that the skateboarder used their own money to take part in the event because they didn't have any sponsors. And on top of that, Coons pointed out that they didn't get the same recognition and treatment as other athletes. They really put their heart and soul into their passion and worked so hard to achieve their dreams but ended up being treated like dirt.
It's concerning that the focus of the Olympics seemed to prioritize the LGBTQIA+ community over the adaptive skate community. The opening ceremony with drag queens on TV made it seem like they were focusing on one thing and kind of ignoring the Paralympic sport.
