Sponsored skateboarder and the winner of skate legend Tony Hawk's Skatepark Hero Michael Manion celebrates a momentous two years of sobriety.
Manion recently opened up about his struggle with alcohol and the transformative ride that led him to a healthier, more fulfilling life.
Manion revealed, "I personally struggled with alcohol for years. It started as something I did every now and then, then every weekend, and eventually every day. It was the first thing I thought about when I woke up and the last thing before I went to sleep."
His candid admission sheds light on the pervasive nature of addiction and the grip it can have on even the most accomplished individuals.
Realizing the need for change, Manion embarked on a ride to break free from the chains of alcoholism. "No matter how many times I would try, I just couldn't quit. I finally found a friend that I trusted to hold me accountable—Garrison Britt, who lives in Colorado." The two formed a daily morning and evening phone call routine, discussing Manion's progress, feelings, and the constant battle against the urge to drink.
"Every day, we would talk about how my day went, how I was feeling, and how badly I wanted a drink. Then right after, we'd discuss the reasons why not drinking was more beneficial and how it was sabotaging my goals of becoming a pro skateboarder," Manion explained. Britt's never-failing support and friendship played a crucial role in Manion's journey to recovery.
Two years later, Manion stands proudly, no longer reliant on the same level of support to maintain his sobriety. "My quality of life has improved so much since making this decision," he shared. Expressing gratitude for the friends who encouraged him to quit, Manion singled out Britt, saying, "Especially Garrison for being there daily."
Manion acknowledges that not everyone who drinks has a problem, but for him, the decision to quit was life-changing. "I definitely feel like I was given a second chance at life, and I plan on making the most of it," he affirmed.
