Following the news, his former partner Rebecca Woolf shared a heartfelt post remembering their relationship and the years they spent together.
Woolf said they met at Sub Palace in 1997, where she gave Micah a free sandwich before he asked her out.
She recalled their early relationship, from trading a skateboard and hoodie for her first tattoo to wearing his clothes to school and watching him skate at demos, ramps and spots around town.
She also remembered the personal moments they shared, including mix tapes, music, learning guitar and the small gestures that meant a lot to her.
One memory stood out most.
Woolf recalled Micah pulling his truck over at the top of Birmingham Boulevard, waiting for traffic to clear before racing down the road and getting air over the final bump.
He would then look at her and ask if she wanted to do it again.
“Of course I always said yes,” she wrote.
Woolf ended her post with a message for Micah and everyone who knew and loved him.
“And if we all went back to another time I would love you over…”
Micah Mattson was born August 22, 1978, and died August 22, 2026.
"We met at Sub Palace (RIP) in 97. I gave him a free sandwich and he asked me out. We were each other’s firsts in so many ways, down to my first tattoo which he traded a skateboard and hoodie for. In those days merch was currency and romantic gestures were spray painted on walls. I worked at a skate shop (K5 RIP) and being Micah’s girlfriend gave me clout. I wore his clothes to school every day senior year, went vegan because he did, too. For prom he dyed his hair to match my dress and I regularly did my homework at Miracles cafe (RIP) where he worked, watched him skateboard behind AMC and on the vert ramp at the Santa Fe house (RIP), at demos in parking lots, fell in love with the way he flicked his “claw” during an Ollie, convinced my mom to adopt him a cat for his birthday (Danzig RIP) in her name bc I was too young to do it myself. He painted me beautiful things, made mix tapes he would decorate with stickers, introduced me to bands like Belle and Sebastian, (I will never forget listening to If You’re Feeling Sinister for the first time in his car) taught me how to play a guitar. He knew how to light two parliaments at once with a flick of a match, handing me one in perfect motion, would sometimes surprise me with a Rico’s burrito at school. He was only ever gentle with me and my body and my heart and never let me pay for anything even though he was always broke. James Iha’s Lover, Lover was our song and we used to sing it to each other in a whisper while squished together in my twin bed under a ceiling full of glowing stars. But the memory that came to me the strongest after finding out that his spirit had gone elsewhere was how he used to pull his truck to the side at the road at the top of Birmingham blvd and wait for the cars to clear so he could race down and get air on the last bump. How he would turn to me, blue eyes flashing, nose squinted, music blaring, sandy-haired and ask me if I wanted to do it again and of course I always said yes. And if we all went back to another time I would love you over…
