EA has already rolled out microtransactions in its upcoming skate. game, despite it still being in closed alpha testing.

The free-to-play revival of the beloved franchise now features an in-game currency called San Van Bucks, which players can use to buy cosmetic items.

According to Insider Gaming, developer Full Circle claims the move is meant to provide a “positive experience when purchasing items from the skate. store.” A message sent to playtesters explains that the system is being tested ahead of early access:

“To ensure we achieve these goals at Early Access we have enabled the option to purchase and use virtual currency (San Van Bucks) in our ongoing Closed Alpha playtest. Your feedback will be greatly appreciated in providing a great experience at Early Access launch.”

Players have been reassured that any purchases made during the alpha will be refunded in San Van Bucks when early access begins.

However, they’ll need to stick with the same EA account to reclaim their in-game currency.

It’s been five years since EA first announced skate. was coming back, and fans have been waiting for any solid updates on its release. While early access is set for later this year, there’s still no confirmed date.

When it does arrive, the game will be available on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, with full cross-play and cross-progression support.

Meanwhile, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater fans have something to look forward to as well. Activision recently revealed that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 is officially getting the remake treatment, bringing the iconic titles back with some tweaks to modernize the experience.

With both franchises making a return, skating games are looking stacked for the near future - though EA’s decision to introduce microtransactions this early is sure to get players talking.
