PUMA is bringing in a former Nike executive to lead its global sports marketing strategy, and the appointment could also have an interesting impact on the brand’s presence in skateboarding.

According to PUMA's press release, Steve Cecchini will join PUMA as Senior Vice President of Sports Marketing on October 1, 2026, reporting directly to PUMA CEO Arthur Hoeld. His new role will involve developing the company’s Sports Marketing organization and managing partnerships with athletes, teams and federations around the world.

Cecchini is not being brought in specifically to run PUMA Skate, but his experience at Nike could give PUMA another perspective on how a global brand can build athlete relationships, product stories and marketing campaigns across different communities.

That could be interesting for skateboarding because PUMA already has history in the category.

One name that stands out is pro skater Joey Brezinski, who previously rode for PUMA.

Brezinski had a relationship with the brand during an earlier period of PUMA’s skateboarding efforts, showing that the company has already had connections with established names from the skate scene.

PUMA has also continued to keep skateboarding connected to its footwear lineup. The PUMA Suede XL is one example, giving the company a product that can appeal directly to skaters while also fitting into the larger lifestyle side of the brand.

More recently, PUMA has also worked with younger skateboarding personalities.

TikTok skater Bby Yoshando has been associated with PUMA through brand partnerships, giving the company another connection to the massive audience that now follows skateboarding through social media. Public profiles also list PUMA among the brands he has partnered with.

That combination is what makes Cecchini’s arrival interesting.

He most recently worked at Nike as General Manager of Global Football Clubs, Federations, Leagues and Partnerships. In that role, he managed long term partnerships while working across product, marketing and marketplace strategy.

Before that, he held several positions in strategy and business development at Nike and PVH Corp. His background is not limited to skateboarding, but he has spent years working inside one of the biggest global athletic brands and dealing with the relationships that help turn athletes, products and partnerships into larger marketing stories.

That experience could become useful for PUMA Skate if the company decides to give the category more attention.

PUMA does not need to start from zero. It already has skate footwear, previous relationships with skateboarders such as Brezinski and newer connections with social media creators. The pieces are already there. A larger and more coordinated marketing effort could bring those pieces together.

There is also another reason skateboarding could be attractive for a global brand right now.

Skateboarding is part of the Olympic program for Los Angeles 2028, with both street and park competitions scheduled for the Games. Skateboarding has already appeared at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024, and its place at LA28 gives brands another huge international platform around the category.

That creates an interesting opportunity for PUMA.

A company that already has skate footwear and some history within skateboarding could potentially benefit from investing more heavily in athletes, content, footwear and grassroots skate culture as Olympic attention continues to grow.

Of course, there has been no announcement saying Cecchini will specifically oversee PUMA Skate, nor has PUMA announced a new skateboarding strategy connected to his appointment.

What we do know is that PUMA is putting a new executive with extensive experience in global marketing and partnerships into one of its most important leadership positions.

For skateboarding, that could be worth watching.

PUMA already has the products. It has worked with skateboarders before. It has connections with newer online personalities. And with skateboarding continuing as an Olympic discipline, there is a growing international audience for brands willing to invest in the category.

If PUMA decides to connect those pieces under a stronger global strategy, its skateboarding business could become a much bigger opportunity for the company.

Cecchini said PUMA has a strong history of supporting athletes and described his new position as an opportunity to help shape the company’s next chapter. He also said the company wants to make strategic investments that fit the brand while serving its athletes, clubs and federations around the world.

So the question for skateboarding is pretty simple: what happens if PUMA decides to take its skate program more seriously?

With the company already having products, history and relationships in the scene, there is plenty for PUMA to build on.
