Stephen Hill OAM, one of Australia’s OG skateboarders and the co-founder of Globe International, has received an Honorary Doctor of Letters from La Trobe University.

The La Trobe Business School alumnus returned to the university’s Bundoora campus on December 11 to accept the honor, which recognises his contributions to skateboarding culture, business, media, fashion and community work.

Hill began his career as a professional skateboarder, competing nationally before teaming up with his brothers Peter and Matt. Together, they started importing skateboards and equipment, eventually creating Hardcore Distribution and later Globe International in 1985.

He also helped establish skateboarding events, international tours and the Globe World Cup Skateboarding competition, bringing top riders to venues including Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena.

His influence extends beyond skateboarding. Through Whyte House Entertainment, Hill has executive produced more than 30 films, documentaries and television projects covering skateboarding, surfing and wider cultural topics.

He has also been involved in community initiatives focused on sustainable transport, healthy living, environmental responsibility and access to skateboarding. More recently, he has campaigned against gambling advertising.

During the ceremony, La Trobe Vice Chancellor Professor Theo Farrell presented Hill with his honorary degree along with a custom skateboard deck designed by graphic artist Marcus Dixon.

Reflecting on his time at La Trobe, Hill credited the university with helping shape his thinking and giving him a strong foundation for his future work.

His advice to the next generation was simple: “Do what you love. Be patient, tenacious and consistent.”

For an OG skater who helped build Australia’s skateboarding industry from the ground up, it is a pretty fitting recognition.
