Canadian skateboarder Cordano Russell has quickly become one of the names to watch on the contest circuit.
His skating has earned attention through strong finishes against some of the world's best competitors, but when it came time to thank the people who have supported him, there was no hesitation about who came first.
During a recent conversation with World Skate, Russell spoke about his rise on the contest circuit, including making the finals at Rome Street 2023, finishing fourth at WST Tokyo Street, and climbing the rankings among the world's top competitors. When he was later asked who he wanted to give a shout out to, his answer focused on something more personal.
Despite those accomplishments, Russell made sure his first shout out was for the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and his church family.
"I want to first and foremost shout out my Lord and saviour Jesus Christ and my church family for all the love and prayers," Russell said.
After thanking Jesus Christ and his church family, Russell also expressed his appreciation for his parents, his sister, and his brother. He continued by thanking his agent, Circe Wallace, along with Toy Machine, Nike SB, Sun Diego Boardshops, Independent, and Canada Skate for giving him the opportunity to represent his country on the international stage.
Russell's response showed that while contest results and sponsorships have helped shape his career, his faith remains at the center of his life.
Even with the opportunity to recognize many influential people, he chose to begin with his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.
Even with all of those accomplishments, Russell's words showed what matters most to him. Before talking about sponsors, opportunities, or personal success, he chose to thank Jesus Christ and the church family that has supported him through prayers and encouragement.
For many skateboarders, contest interviews often become an opportunity to thank brands or celebrate recent results.
Russell took a different approach by placing his faith first, giving credit to the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ before acknowledging everyone else who has played a part in his career.
It was a simple answer, but one that offered a look at the values that continue to guide him both on and off the skateboard.
