Pro skateboarder Jimmy Carlin is now stepping into a new role as a teacher after years of living life on a professional skateboard.
In a recent interview with Jenkem blog, Carlin shared how this shift came together and why teaching ended up making sense for him later in life.
Larry Lanza from Jenkem asked how he figured out he wanted to become a teacher.
Carlin explained that teaching was always around him growing up. At first, he wanted nothing to do with it.
When he was finishing high school and his family suggested going into education, he brushed it off.
At that time he said something along the lines of not understanding why he would want to be a teacher.
Years later, his thinking changed.
He shared that his family has deep roots in education.
His dad worked as a naval commander flying rescue helicopters and later taught at the Naval Academy before moving on to teach high school.
His mom was a teacher as well. His sister teaches too, and even his grandparents were in education.
With that background, teaching was always in the picture, even if he did not take it seriously at first.
Over time, Carlin found himself coming back to the idea and seeing it differently.
What once felt like something to avoid eventually became something he actually wants to do.
Now, after his years in professional skateboarding, he is preparing to step into the classroom and start a new chapter focused on teaching.
But of course you have to watch his insane Battle Commander to remind yourself that he is an insane pro skater and his students would be proud for sure.
