Cardinal Skate Shop will close its doors on April 25, 2025 after 15 years in business, ending a long run for one of the more recognizable core skate shops in Norfolk’s NEON District.

Owner Jason Hawkes is planning a goodbye gathering on the final day, giving locals one last chance to step inside the shop before it shuts down.

Hawkes said the decision was not something he wanted, but something he had to accept after falling behind on rent.

He described the shop as his long-running dream, something he put years into building and shaping, even if it did not end the way he originally imagined.

He first took over Cardinal Skate Shop in 2009 and later moved it from Virginia Beach to Norfolk in 2016 after signing a new lease.

Over the years, the shop became more than just a retail space. It carried skateboards, parts, and apparel, but also built out a deeper identity with a skateboarding library filled with old magazines, books, and collectibles.

Hawkes pointed to a mix of challenges that built up over time, including crime in the surrounding area, the effects of COVID era disruptions, and ongoing construction in the NEON District that impacted foot traffic and visibility for nearby businesses.

As the closing date approaches, Hawkes also shared a message about the remaining inventory inside the shop.

He described a wall filled with skateboard decks collected over the years, saying it is the strongest collection he has ever had inside the store.

While not every item is shown, everything that is available for sale is currently on display, along with a few additional pieces that did not fit on the wall.

He said that nothing is being given away and items are not being sold cheaply, noting that the collection holds value and is priced accordingly.

He also asked that full sets stay intact and not be split up. Anyone interested in purchasing items is encouraged to contact the shop directly or reach out through DM to arrange details.

Cardinal Skate Shop now moves into its final stretch, with longtime customers and locals expected to stop by before the doors close for good.

"I have had a lot of boards on my walls over the last 20 years and right now without a doubt I can tell you this is the most incredible wall in any operating Skate Shop this very day. This is not everything, but this is everything I’m selling and there’s a little bit more that just didn’t fit on the wall. It’s not free. It’s not cheap but it’s better than you’re gonna find on eBay or anywhere else. If you or anybody you know, may be interested in anything here please let them know. Things didn’t go the way I had hoped but they’re going the way they are and I’m grateful for anybody who even considers purchasing any. Please do not ask to break up any sets, they are staying as sets.
You can call the shop or DM me here and we can work it out. Thanks for everything everyone. Stay tuned"
