One year ago, Chris evacuated his 87-year-old mother, her cat Pepper, and their 91-year-old neighbor from the area he grew up in, thinking they would be back within a day or two.
Instead, that day or two turned into a moment that changed everything.
Chris shared on social media how he spent that evening with his mother watching their ring camera live feed until it went dark, realizing that returning home would not be possible.
“It’s devastating to lose everything you’ve known your whole life,” he wrote. “The most important thing, and what I’m most grateful for, is that everyone is okay and they’re thriving today.”
Even after losing the home he grew up in, there is a sense of comfort knowing his loved ones are safe and have adapted.
His mother and their elderly neighbor now live in the same building again, and Pepper the cat has taken her role as the neighborhood watcher very seriously, keeping an eye on everything on her floor.
Chris also visited his old home to document the damage, taking the time to reflect on the past year and what it meant to him personally.
While the wildfire caused a loss that is hard to put into words, he emphasizes gratitude for what remains and the people who matter most in his life.
Through it all, Chris’s story shows that even after losing so much, connections and family can continue to thrive.
