If you’ve ever stepped foot on a skateboard or followed the culture even a little, you’ve probably heard of Skatepark of Tampa.
But do you actually know how it all began? This new documentary lays it all out with stories straight from the source, showing how something built on passion and persistence turned into one of the most influential skate scenes in the world.
Back in 1991, Paul Zitzer’s vert ramp got taken down, leaving a huge hole in the local skate community.
That moment became a turning point. Brian Schaefer, a skater with big ideas and a lot of grit, started looking for a place to bring the ramp back to life.
He found a warehouse in Tampa that didn’t just serve as a location. It became a second home. A place where skating wasn’t just welcomed. It was everything.
By 1995, SPoT had already established the Tampa Pro contest, which is now the longest running event of its kind.
Fun fact: The very first one had a $1,000 prize, thanks to Airwalk. That early support may not seem like much today, but it helped spark something big. Over the years, the contest grew into a major event where future icons often first made their mark.
Skaters from all over the world now look at Tampa Am and Tampa Pro as the place where careers begin.
